Event Details

Our winter forum and AGM will be held in the Atholl Centre, Pitlochry on the 26th January 2012. All paid up members and associate members are entitled to attend the AGM.  At the AGM the Agenda will include election of executive and committee, approval of the constitution, approval of accounts for 2011, reports from the committee about the past year and proposals for the future and other items including your views on what the society should do in the future.

Our winter forum is an opportunity for you to raise issues about the course with the people in charge of it and also to speak to others potentially experiencing similar issues.  A draft of the current proposed agenda will be sent to those who express an interest in attending.  In the evening of the 26th we are holding a Burns Supper fundraiser.  The forum venue has low cost accommodation on site that you can book through the society.

Following breakfast on the 27th we shall travel to Edinburgh where you will have the option to visit different sites including the option of a tour of the Scottish Parliament.  There may be other organised tours available such as those for Edinburgh Castle and those expressing an interest will be made aware of these.

13.45 – Talk by Dr Elizabeth Ritchie on Flora MacDonald - Most people have heard of Flora MacDonald's adventures in helping Bonnie Prince Charlie escape from the government troops who were hunting him down after Culloden. Far fewer people know about the adventures she had during the rest of her life. The terrible winters of the early 1770s pushed her towards a fresh start in the colonies where she arrived just in time for the American Revolution! After escaping from North Carolina she discovered life in a military fort in wintry Nova Scotia was no more congenial and Flora returned to Britain. Needless to say, the voyage was not without incident! Flora's story illustrates crucial themes in social, economic, military and emigration history demonstrating the interconnectedness of the Western Isles, imperial Britain and North America in the late eighteenth century.
